아드리아나의 이야기

My name is Adriana Martinez,

Twenty years ago, I came to the City of Chicago in the Little Village community. I emigrated from my country in search of a better quality of life, however the emotion and need did not let me think about consequences, suffering or barriers that I was going to encounter on the road and in the day to day. For example, having worked in factories where work has to be done no matter how strong you are or heavy the work is and if you don't do it the managers tell you “if you don’t like it well you can go home, don't ask for work” but due to necessity and status it does not allow us to have a choice and we have to put up with that kind of attitude. And politicians, they don’t think about people like me either.

안녕하세요, 제 이름은 아드리아나 마르티네즈 입니다. 20년 전에 저는 시카고의 리틀빌리지라는 동네로 이사를 왔어요. 처음 올 때만 하더라도, 더 나은 삶을 살기 위해 이민을 왔다는 생각뿐이었지, 길에서 또 이민자로서 매일 맞닥뜨리게 될 고난 등 제 선택이 가져다줄 어려움에 대해서는 생각해볼 정서적 상황이 아니었어요. 예를 들면 이민서류가 없는 저 같은 경우는 살아남기 위해 그리고 다른 선택이 없었기에 고강도의 노동이 필요로 하는 직장에서 일해야 했죠. 개인 사정이나 능력에 상관없이 무조건 어떤 일을 해내야만 하고 또 그 일에 대한 어려움을 피력할 경우 매니저에게 “일을 잘 던가 아니면 집에서 쉬던가 해”라는 이야기를 들어야만 하는 노동환경에서 일해야만 했습니다. 물론 정치인들도 저 같은 사람에 대해서는 큰 관심을 두고 있지 않겠죠.

Personally the COVID-19 pandemic has made it even worse. I have already lost quite a few family members in Mexico, in fact I have been on the verge of losing my mother who has been so sick but I think something good is going to happen. God continues to protect her so that my children, my husband and I can see her again.  My father also, although he is not so sick he is a senior citizen and we would like to embrace him again. I hope that this dream we have can be possible.I have always lived with uncertainty and fear, not to mention in these last 4 years by the administration that we had with racist, anti-immigrant and inhumane ideologies.

개인적으로 이번 코로나 사태는 제 상황을 더욱더 어렵게 만들었어요. 코로나바이러스-19로 인해서 멕시코에 있던 가족들 몇 명을 이미 잃었고 특히 제 어머니가 생명이 위독하셔서 너무 힘들었지만 안 좋은 일들 끝엔 좋은 일들이 생길 거라고 믿고 버텼습니다. 하느님은 언제나 저희를 보호해주시니까 제 아이들과 남편, 저 자신이 언젠가는 저희 어머니와 다시 만날 수 있도록 도와주실 거라고 믿고 있어요. 아버지가 현재 건강은 괜찮으시지만, 연세가 많이 드셔서 우리 가족들은 아버지와 꼭 다시 만나서 포옹을 진하게 한번 해드리고 싶어요. 저희가 가진 이런 꿈들이 언젠가는 현실이 되길 기원합니다. 저는 언제나 불확실성과 공포를 느끼고 살았어요. 특히 반이민자 적이고 인종차별주의 및 비인간적인 방식으로 지난 4년을 통치했던 이전 행정부 밑에서는 더더욱 그랬었습니다.

Fortunately, I have found opportunities for personal growth that I would not have had in my country, and I have found a community here in Chicago. Thanks to the Enlace Chicago Organization I have had that growth and found that community.

다행히도 제 고향에서는 찾을 수 없던 개인적인 성장을 이룩해낼 수 있는 기회를 많이 찾았고 시카고에서 커뮤니티도 찾게 되었습니다. ENLACE 시카고를 통해 서로 믿고 의지할 수 있는 커뮤니티에 속하게 됐고 개인적 성장도 이뤘습니다.

Enlace is a member of ICIRR, and before I realized I did not see myself in the proposals. I cannot get DACA, though my son has. I am not protected at all. But that’s why I have hope right now - because we are moving towards and holding strong in our demand for citizenship for ALL. 

제 아들은 DACA를 통해 보호받고 있지만 저는 어떠한 법률적 보호도 받고 있지 못합니다. ENLACE가 속해 있는 ICIRR 활동을 통해서 예전 법안에는 제가 해택을 못 받는다는 것도 알게 되었어요. 하지만 이제는 더 많은 사람을 포함하는 법안이 나오고 모든 사람에게 시민권을 주는 것을 요구하는 것을 보면서 큰 희망을 품고 있습니다.

We need relief and protection for all 11 million people who are undocumented RIGHT NOW. I am glad that Biden has been open to it in his first proposal. But we have to push through to make sure this actually happens, and that the final immigration bill includes EVERYBODY.

We are fighting for justice for all, not justice for some! That’s why we need citizenship for ALL!

1,100만여 명의 서류 미비자들을 보호할 수 있는 법안이 지금 당장 필요합니다. 바이든 행정부가 내놓은 이민법안에 모두가 포함될 수 있어서 너무 행복합니다. 하지만 이 법안이 입법되기 전까지 더 큰 노력을 해야 합니다. 그래서 최종적으로 통과된 법안에는 모두가 포함될 수 있도록 말이죠. 저희는 특정한 사람들을 위한 정의가 아니라 모두를 위한 정의를 위해 싸우고 있는 겁니다. 이런 이유로 모두를 위한 시민권이 필요하다고 생각입니다.
